Apple has taken decisive action by removing controversial apps from its App Store that utilized generative AI to create nonconsensual nude imagery. This decision reflects a growing commitment by the tech giant to address the misuse of AI technologies in its offerings.
The removed apps, which included features such as face-swaps on adult images and tools marketed as “Undress” apps, allowed users to virtually strip clothing off individuals in photos. The removal followed an investigative report by 404 Media, which highlighted the availability and marketing of these apps, prompting Apple to act.
Prior to this, Apple’s approach had been relatively hands-off, despite the potential harms associated with such apps. It wasn't until external alerts were made that Apple removed these apps, underscoring a slow but necessary response to emerging digital ethics issues.
Google has also taken similar steps by removing related apps from the Google Play Store. Additionally, Meta intervened by removing advertisements for these apps from Instagram after they were flagged.
Despite these efforts, challenges remain. The apps initially appeared innocuous on the App Store, with their harmful capabilities only advertised externally, typically on adult-oriented websites. This situation highlights the ongoing struggle for tech companies to effectively police content that can exploit AI technology for harmful purposes.
Apple's recent actions also align with its broader strategy to maintain ethical standards in its AI implementations, focusing on privacy-preserving training methods and lawful use of copyrighted materials.
